Monika Randall won’t have far to travel to compete in the 2011 International Children’s Winter Games—but that doesn’t mean the 13-year-old KLO Middle School student is taking her event preparation lightly.
Randall, a member of the Kelowna Skating Club, was selected to represent the City of Kelowna in the upcoming Children’s Games, which take place from Jan. 26 to 31.
She laced up her first pair of skates at age three, when she participated in Canskate.
Ten years later, the now Grade 8 student is ranked fifth in the province.
Her highest achievement to date is winning first place at SaskSkate, an invitation-only skating competition that includes the top skaters from B.C. to Western Ontario.
Randall hopes to one day finish in the top three at a national competition.
For now, she’ll settle for landing her double axel at the International Children’s Games.
To get ready for the Games, she will spend the next two months training on and off the ice six days a week for a minimum of two hours per day.
